Meet Mama Maria

I’m Maria, the heart and hands behind this cosy kitchen space, where I share homestyle recipes that nourish the body, bring joy to the table, and make cooking feel like second nature.

With a background in health science and a degree in myotherapy, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for how food impacts our bodies, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

The food we eat literally becomes the cells that make up our body, rebuilding and replenishing us from the inside out. But just as important as good nutrition is having a healthy relationship with food, one that’s joyful, balanced, and free from stress.

Food can be a good friend if we let it. I believe in an 80/20 approach, when we regularly cook meals at home that nourish and sustain us, we can also have fun with food, enjoy indulgences, and create a balance that works.

A good relationship with food also means having a good relationship with cooking itself, seeing it as something replenishing rather than a chore.

I know cooking can feel overwhelming, meal planning, dietary needs, shopping, prepping, the cooking itself, the clean up, it all adds up!

That’s why Mama Maria’s Homestyle Cooking is here, to make it easier, more intuitive, and truly enjoyable.

A Legacy of Homestyle Cooking

My love for cooking is deeply rooted in my family. I was born in Russia to a Russian mother and a Serbian father, and we moved to Australia when I was four years old. My Russian grandmother (baba), Galina, came from an era where everything was cooked from scratch, and she passed down her love of homestyle cooking to me.

On my Serbian side, my baba Rada also had a deep love for cooking, and between the two of them, I was immersed in the rich culinary traditions of Russian, Balkan, and European cuisine. Their recipes, their stories, and their passion for food live on through me.

Cooking and writing are the two threads that weave through my life, and I get my love of storytelling from my Serbian grandfather (deda), Rasa Popov, a well-known Serbian author. Through this website, I bring those two passions together, preserving and sharing recipes that otherwise might have been lost with my grandmothers, as well as recipes that I have found, created, tried and tested in my own kitchen over the years.

These are real recipes, made in my home kitchen, tested, loved, and worth sharing. I want to bring back the joy of home cooking, inspire your meals, and provide easy to follow recipes that fit into your life. No endless scrolling, no ads, just the recipe upfront, followed by helpful tips and variations.

Let’s bring cooking back to what it should be: simple, nourishing, and a true pleasure.

Beyond this blog, I have a deep love for writing and have many other projects and things I work on, check out my Linktree here to have a browse.
